WMS edges Panthers in double overtime

FRANKLIN — It took double overtime, but the Waynesville Middle School girls soccer team pulled off a thrilling 5-3 Blue Ridge Conference victory over defeated Macon Middle on Thursday, April 11.
The win improved WMS to 5-0-1 overall.
The Mountaineers’ Anna Norman scored twice in regulation as the BRC match went to the first overtime period tied at two.  
In the first minute of ther first overtime, Norman completed the “hat trick” when she found the back of the Panthers’ goal to give WMS a 3-2 lead. But minutes later, Macon Middle scored to tie the match at three.
In the second overtime, Mary Rachel Carter scored twice to secure victory for the Mountaineers.
The WMS girls have defeated Madison (6-0), Asheville Christian Academy (1-0), Apple Valley (6-0) and two against Macon Middle (5-4 and 5-3). They Mountaineers tied Flat Rock Middle. (2-2).
Tri-captain Norman leads Waynesville Middle with eight goals, Carter (tri-captain) and Katie Fielden have scored five each while WMS goalkeeper Natalie Swaim has made eight saves this season.
The 2013 edition of the WMS girls soccer team is led by eighth-graders Norman, Carter, Alexa McCall (tri-captain), Fielden and Sophia Jackson. The seventh graders on the squad are Ani Adams, Madelyn Bates, Emma Clarke, Christina DeBrew, Nora Dickson, Olivia Johnson, Emma Jane Kimmett, Kendall Myers and Olivia Ottinger.
The Waynesville Middle girls are coached by Kelsey Shepard  and  Ashley  Pompey.
