The Waynesville Middle School seventh-grade science department sponsored a school-wide fundraiser to bring awareness to genetic disorders.

Jeans for Genes and Hats for Hope gave the students and faculty an opportunity to donate money.

Students, faculty and staff gave a total of $318 to the Fragile X Research Foundation.  Fragile X syndrome is a genetic condition involving changes in part of the X chromosome. It is the most common form of inherited intellectual disability in boys.

The funds were presented to Jennifer Kelly, a fellow teacher and mother of a son with Fragile X syndrome.
