Special to The Mountaineer — The Haywood County Chapter of Wycliffe Associates will have their annual summer picnic from 6 to 8:30 p.m. Monday  July 8, 2013, at the pavilion at Broyhill Children's Home on Jones Cove Road.

The meeting includes a potluck with hamburgers and hot dogs. Guests are invited to bring other picnic foods, drinks and desserts for themselves and for the children from Broyhill.

The speakers will be Gene and Marilyn Ahrens of Wycliffe Bible Translators' JAARS Center at Waxhaw, North Carolina.

Gene Ahrens grew up as a pastor's boy, the oldest of four, in rural Missouri and Illinois. He came to know the Lord at an early age and became rooted and grounded in the Word, through his church and youth camps. He met and married Bobbie Cooper, and by 1979 they, with their four children, joined Wycliffe Bible Translators.

The Ahrens family lived in Papua New Guinea for nearly twenty years, serving the Bible translators through airstrip construction, dorm parenting, and managing regional centers. They were planning a furlough when Bobbie woke up sick one day and passed away two days later, January 24, 2005.

With God by his side, Gene packed up and moved back to North Carolina to work on the grounds and maintenance crew at JAARS where vital training takes place.

Gene met Marilyn who was serving at the Museum of the Alphabet and they were married Oct 29, 2012. Together they have served in Suriname and Papua New Guinea on short term assignments. They desire to continue to serve the Lord together at JAARS in the Museum of the Alphabet and in the Mexico-Cárdenas Museum.

They share the vision of Bible Translation with people of all ages and from all over the world.

Wycliffe Associates is a lay organization supporting Wycliffe Bible Translators in their goal of providing the Scriptures for all the world's people in their own native languages. For more information, call Woodcock at 456-5863.
