Wycliffe Associates Meeting
Clyde First Baptist Church
227 Main Street, Clyde, NC
Jan 13, 2014
6:30 PM - 8:30 PM
The Haywood County Chapter of Wycliffe Associates will meet on Monday evening, January 13, at the First Baptist Church of Clyde. The meeting will be held in the Fellowship Hall of the church, beginning with a pot-luck supper at 6:30 pm and ending at 8:30 pm. Care will be provided for younger children. All with an interest in linguistics, literacy and Bible translation are invited to attend.
The speakers will be Dee, Shawn and Pari Collins. They work with a multitude of deaf communities, in different cultures, around the world, who use sign language as a means of communication. The primary role of their ministry is to design software using realistic-looking animated characters or avatars for sign language communities working on Bible translation.
Reading can be difficult for deaf people. If you cannot hear, reading is learned by memorization. Spoken grammar is not the same as sign language grammar, so there is a real challenge when reading the spoken language. For most deaf people, reading is a second or third language.
