Zaxby's gets in the giving spirit
Zaxby’s in Waynesville has started a “12 Gifts of Christmas” program aimed at helping a broad spectrum of nonprofit organizations.
Beginning Wednesday, Dec. 12, the restaurant will donate 10 percent of their daily proceeds to a dozen nonprofits in Haywood County this holiday season.
Jon McKasson, general manager for the Waynesville store, said the program was wildly successful in Brevard, where it was started last year by franchise owner Jim Rodgers, a Georgia-based Western Carolina University graduate. Since Rodgers owns the Zaxby’s locations in Waynesville and Sylva, he has expanded to program to those sites, too.
“He’s a real hands-on owner and is very community oriented,” McKasson said of Rodgers. “We’ve selected a broad spectrum of charities and are trying to branch out to all areas.”
Zaxby’s employees were asked to be part of the process, he said.
Beginning Wednesday, Zaxby’s in Waynesville will be donating 10 percent of the daily sales to Haywood Christian Academy. The Salvation Army will receive proceeds from Dec. 13 sales, while Habitat for Humanity is getting the donation for Dec. 14 sales.
On Dec. 15, R.E.A.C.H. is the designated nonprofit, and The Community Kitchen of Canton will receive the Dec. 16 donations.
Starting Monday, Dec. 17, the following nonprofits will each receive the daily proceeds through Dec. 23: Meals on Wheels, Haywood Christian Ministry, Haywood Spay Neuter, Mission Children’s Hospital, Open Door, American Red Cross and KARE.
“We were trying to get every aspect of the community covered,” McKasson said. “We’ll probably end up donating $5,000 to $6,000 to charities through this.”
